KB Bank to launch the first crypto investment fund in South Korea
Kookmin Bank has announced plans to become the first bank in South Korea to offer crypto investment products to retail investors.
KB wants to offer a crypto index fund
The bank announced on February 21 that it has formed a Digital Asset Management Preparatory Committee to define product and strategy capabilities related to digital assets and artificial intelligence investment funds. The committee will also evaluate risk and compliance issues for the investment funds. In an official statement from the bank, KB's Head of Index Quant Management, Honggun Kim, confirmed some plans. He said, "We will launch a virtual asset-themed equity fund, etc. We plan to publish periodicals as well."Current plans include the launch of a crypto index fund and a fund that uses an Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO), also known as outsourced investment management, to provide guarantees for capital investments. The OCIO fund can also be used for retirement savings. OCIOs under consideration include Grayscale and Fidelity Asset Management, each of which offers crypto investment funds.
Investors are more willing to invest in crypto
According to the research platform MacroTrends, KB Financial Group had total assets of about $520 billion as of September 2021. By launching a new investment fund for its clients, KB is responding to a market becoming increasingly open-minded to investments in cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).KB now follows Singapore-based DBS Bank in announcing new retail crypto investment products. Piyush Gupta, CEO of DBS Bank, said on February 14 that the bank will work to expand its crypto business in 2022. However, KB will not offer cryptocurrencies directly to its customers, as local regulations currently prevent South Korean banks from offering cryptocurrency trading directly.
