A16z announces the creation of a crypto research unit focusing on web3
American venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz or a16z, has announced the creation of a new kind of multidisciplinary lab, the a16z crypto research unit.
A16z gears up for the research
Through the announcement of its new crypto research unit, a16z emphasized the importance of research by stating that each new entrepreneurial idea in the world of web3 “tends to uncover fresh research challenges that are fundamental to how this technological movement will play out.” These challenges mainly include infrastructure scaling and development, tokenomics, and methods of building token economies in web3 applications. The firm added:“There is an opportunity for an industrial research lab to help bridge the worlds of academic theory with industry practice and to help shape crypto and web3 as a formal area of study by bringing together the very best research talent from the various disciplines that are relevant to the space.”With funds reportedly worth $9 billion, a16z aims to use its funding into crypto research to grow into “many multiples of the next couple of years.”
The venture capital firm has appointed Tim Roughgarden, a theoretical computer scientist and Columbia University professor, to serve as the head of a16z’s new crypto research unit. Other members of the founding team include the famous MBA professor Scott Duke Kominers, Meta’s Valeria Nikolaenko, Espresso Systems’ Chief Scientist Benedikt Bünz, and crypto writer Joseph Bonneau.
Expansion of a16z
A16z has been tying its hands in research and development lately.
