American oil company Exxon initiates a Gas-to-Bitcoin Pilot mining program
Bloomberg has released a report confirming that an American oil company called Exxon is reportedly working on a gas-to-Bitcoin model which will be used to mine cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin. It seems that the mining craze is catching up far and wide.
Exxon introduces gas-to-Bitcoin mining program
Exxon is all set to introduce the gas-to-Bitcoin mining program which will use the “excess natural gas that would otherwise be burned off from North Dakota oil wells to power cryptocurrency mining operations,” as per Bloomberg’s report. The people with knowledge of the topic revealed the details but asked to remain unnamed.Furthermore, to successfully implement this operation, Exxon is partnering with Crusoe Energy Systems, a firm that offers solutions to prevent natural flaring, one of the biggest issues related to the production of oil from shale. Crusoe Energy Systems provide a digital way out of natural gas flaring.
The pilot is being run in the Bakken shale basin, North Dakota by Exxon wherein mobile generators are powered with the help of oil, and Bitcoin mining rigs have been set up that would run using the energy from these generators. Bloomberg report added that Exxon launched the project in January 2021.
“The pilot project, which launched in January 2021 and expanded in July, uses up 18 million cubic feet of gas per month that would have otherwise been burned off -- or flared -- because there aren’t enough pipelines. “
What is natural gas flaring?
Natural gas flaring is in common words loss of natural gas associated with oil extraction and has been prevalent for over 160 years in the oil industry.
