Apple open their arms to crypto in iOS 13
Earlier this week, apple announced iOS 13, with a host of new features as usual. However, as welcome as Dark Mode is, for crypto enthusiasts, there were a couple of new additions that will be of particular interest. Most significantly, apple introduced "CryptoKit", a new framework that will enable developers carry out typical cryptographic tasks. Additionally, they have introduced the Bitcoin logo into their Icon Set.
CryptoKit will be available within iOS 13, and will be aimed to aid developers in creating more secure apps. Apple described CryptoKit as:
“a new Swift framework that makes it easier and safer than ever to perform cryptographic operations, whether you simply need to compute a hash or are implementing a more advanced authentication protocol.”
Developers will welcome CryptoKit with open arms, not only with the potential to create more secure apps but with an eye for developing a potential iPhone hardware wallet. Samsung has already stated their stance in respect to crypto, announcing earlier this year that the Galaxy S10 flagship model will have support for smart keys.
Apple also added the Bitcoin logo into their Icon Set, a much smaller but perhaps just as significant move. It illustrates that apple are not shunning crypto, and by including the logo into the set shows that they are starting to embrace the crypto space - publicly. This small move may well just be the beginning of a much greater significant move from apple into crypto.
