Binance to open an exchange in Indonesia, in talks with the Hartonos
Binance, the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has been continuously expanding throughout the world. In a recent report with Bloomberg, the crypto exchange is in talks with Hartonos, the richest family in the country, to open a new branch in Indonesia.
Binance in talks with PT Bank Central Asia (BCA)
Binance Holdings Ltd. is now ready to begin its journey in Indonesia and take advantage of the growing crypto market in the country. The firm is reportedly in talks with Budi and Michael Hartonos, the well-known billionaire siblings, and the PT Bank Central Asia, which is owned by them. Also, the firm is in talks with the largest state-owned telecom firm PT Telkom Indonesia.The terms of the deal still aren't clear, but the report says that the BCA might enter into the partnership via a different business entity, while the terms of the partnership with Binance could also vary during the time of finalization of the deal.
Second venture for the exchange
This partnership marks the second venture for Binance in the country, after the partnership with crypto exchange Tokocrypto. Currently, the Indonesian government looks at cryptocurrencies as a commodity, which trades alongside other securities. A deal with the country's richest family might establish Binance's stronghold in Indonesia.However, there is a catch. As per a report from Forbes, Muslims cannot trade cryptocurrencies as they don't follow Sharia tenets. Indonesia has the world's biggest population, and according to Asrorun Niam Sholeh, head of the fatwa, or religious decrees, at the Indonesian Ulema Council, cryptocurrencies are haram or forbidden.
While the authorities are not bound to go as per the rules of the Council, things might get tricky for the users of the Binance platform as the country has the world's largest Muslim population. Due to an increase in regulatory pressure, Binance has been actively expanding in the Asia-Pacific region.
