Bitcoin.org suffered a scam attack
Bitcoin.org, the popular website with Bitcoin’s original whitepaper, suffered an attack a few hours ago. Cobra, Bitcoin.org’s anonymous curator, announced this latest development earlier today, stating that the website suffered a scam attack.
According to Bitcoin developer Matt Corallo, the hacker replaced the entire site with a scam asking for free Bitcoin. He asked site visitors not to send funds to the address. Corallo went on to report the incident to Namecheap, and the site was taken down. According to Cobra, the Bitcoin.org website could be down for a few days.
Hacker receives over $17,000
Prior to the site going offline, users reported that Bitcoin.org was displaying a fake giveaway announcement, and the attacker was able to collect about $17,000 to their addresses.
The hack comes just a few months after the Bitcoin.org site suffered a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.
