Blossom Capital dives into crypto with new $432 million fund
London-based venture capital firm Blossom Capital plans to put significantly more money into the cryptocurrency market.
Blossom Capital will be getting deeper into crypto
Blossom announced a new $432 million fund this morning. The money will go to European startups seeking Series A capital across various sectors, including cybersecurity, developer tools, enterprise software-as-a-service, fintech, and marketplaces. But a full third of the capital will be invested in crypto-based companies. It appears that the company has invested a lot of time and resources in developing the infrastructure needed to invest in web3 companies.Blossom does not appear to have much experience backing crypto companies, aside from its investment in MoonPay last November, when the crypto payments company raised $555 million at a valuation of $3.4 billion. But Blossom's second fund, worth $185 million, has been quietly investing in tokens and even NFTs without presenting those bets in the way a typical equity investment would.
Blossom has been doing pretty well
According to its website, Blossom Capital has also invested in video scaling platform api.video, automation company Aurelia and payment gateway Checkout.com. The investment in Checkout.com was made when the payments startup raised $230 million in May 2019. Checkout.com's value has grown from $2 billion to $40 billion. Since some of Blossom's portfolio companies, like Checkout.out, are also getting into cryptocurrency, it made sense for the company to get involved in this space.Aside from the size of the checks and the increased focus on cryptocurrencies, Blossom does not plan to make any significant changes to the way the fund is managed. The team will write only five or six checks per year and remain very active in managing portfolio companies.
