Brevan Howard plans to invest more in cryptocurrencies
Hedge fund Brevan Howard announced on Monday that it will expand its crypto business. This is the latest sign that institutional interest in the asset class is picking up steam.
Brevan Howard launches a new division called "BH Digital"
The firm is launching a new division called "BH Digital" to manage its cryptocurrencies and digital assets and has also hired CMT Digital Chief Executive Colleen Sullivan to lead private and venture investments in cryptocurrencies. Sullivan has led CMT Digital - a division of CMT Group focused on crypto trading, blockchain investing, and legal/policy engagement in the industry - since late 2013. At Brevan, she will lead an investment committee focused on developing a new strategy for crypto technology.Howard himself is no newcomer to the crypto space and has made several investments, including the ICE-owned digital asset platform Bakkt and EOS -developer Block.one . This summer, he led a $25 million extension raise for London-based crypto services company Copper.co and also invested in Asian crypto investment platform Kikitrade.
Institutional interest is on the rise
Brevan's expansion follows other high-profile asset managers venturing into the space in recent months. Hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones has invested in bitcoin, while Man Group (EMG.L) trades bitcoin futures.An annual report published by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Alternative Investment Management Association and Elwood Asset Management found that assets under management by crypto hedge funds globally nearly doubled to $3.8 billion in 2020 from $2 billion the previous year.
