UK-based hedge fund Brevan Howard is set to invest 1.5% of its portfolio in cryptocurrencies. People familiar with the firm told Bloomberg the hedge fund wants to gain exposure to digital currencies.The firm intends to invest 1.5% of a $5.6 billion fund in cryptos and other digital assets. The sources added that Brevan Howard had termed the investments an “initial allocation.” The investment will be handled by Johnny Steindorff and Tucker Waterman, co-founders of Distributed Global, a crypto investment firm.
Brevan Howard has been around for nearly two decades and is one of the leading macro hedge funds in the world. It currently controls over $10 billion in assets under management. The firm was founded by Alan Howard, the British billionaire.
Howard is a massive crypto investor
Alan Howard is popular in the cryptocurrency space for investing in several projects over the past years. Last month, Alan Howard took control of 8% of stakes in CoinShares, Europe’s largest crypto asset manager. He bought the shares at roughly $61.5 million.The billionaire is also the owner of Elwood Asset Management, an investment firm founded in 2018 and focuses on cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. He also owns stakes in several other cryptocurrency and blockchain projects.
Howard has been linked to hedge fund One River Asset Management, which recently invested over $1 billion in Bitcoin and Ether. Several traditional financial institutions have entered the cryptocurrency space and invested billions of dollars over the past year.
The institutional investment has helped Bitcoin and several other cryptocurrencies rally to all-time highs over the past year.
