China increases its censorship over news outlets and mining pools
China continues to expand its internet censorship, putting pressure on crypto media, mining pools and exchanges. This is part of an effort to reduce Chinese access to the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
Chinese Crypto media outlets are shutting down
Chainnews, one of China's most prominent crypto media companies founded in 2017, has closed all content production and distribution channels. Bitcoin Magazine reported the mobile apps and web domains of three Chinese crypto media outlets Chainnews, ODaily, and BlockBeats have been barely accessible since the beginning of the month. Since then, they have switched to the official Telegram channels to keep users updated and have set up new web domains.However, it seems that the editor-in-chief of Chainnews has changed his mind and announced that the platform will be shut down completely, thanking everyone who has been loyal to it over the years. This comes a few months after popular market price information websites like CoinMarketCap, CoinGecko, and TradingView were blocked by China's "Great Firewall."
Mining Pools have been blocked
According to a recent document published by China Telecom, the leading Chinese Internet service provider has developed a detailed solution to detect domestic miner IPs communicating with mining pool URLs. Based on the ongoing detection, China Telecom can either block Internet services for specific IPs or manually block the URLs that mining pools use to connect to individual devices.The domains of nearly all of the top 10 mining pools by real-time hashrate for Bitcoin and Ethereum are inaccessible from IPs within China. For F2Pool, ViaBTC, BinancePool, and BTC.com, the real-time hash rate for Bitcoin and Ethereum has dropped by about 10% in the last 24 hours. ViaBTC users reported onTelegram that they are having difficulty accessing the pool.
