There are not many details, but according to the NFA website, Coinbase filed the application on September 15 under the name "Coinbase Global Inc."Coinbase confirmed the move on Twitter, saying, "this is the next step to broaden our offerings and offer futures and derivatives trading on our platforms. Goal: Further grow the crypto economy."
Assuming the NFA approves Coinbase's application to become an FCM member. The company will need to register with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to offer futures and derivatives to its clients.
The NFA is a self-regulatory organization for the U.S. derivatives industry designated by the CFTC as a registered futures association. An FCM is defined as an organization that accepts orders to buy or sell futures or options in exchange for payment of dollars or other assets from customers.
The exchange is in a regulatory battle
Coinbase is currently battling the SEC over its lending product, which offers U.S. customers a 4% annual return on USDC deposits. The financial regulator apparently claims it violates securities laws.On September 8, Coinbase's CEO Brian Armstrong spoke out on Twitter, questioning why the regulator had threatened to sue Coinbase when other platforms already offer returns on stablecoins and criticizing the behavior of the SEC.
According to a report from Economic Times, Coinbase also sold $2 billion worth of junk bonds this week in an offering that included orders for $7 billion worth of seven- and 10-year bonds.
