Coinbase to buy Osprey Funds
US-based crypto exchange Coinbase is one of the leading digital currency platforms in the world. The exchange recently became a publicly-listed company, and it is now expanding its services to cover other financial markets.Two people close to the deal told CoinDesk that Coinbase is currently negotiating with Osprey Funds to acquire the asset management firm. One of the sources disclosed that talks are at an advanced level, but it remains informal at this stage. When contacted, Osprey Funds declined to comment on the rumor, while Coinbase maintains that it doesn’t comment on speculations.
Coinbase could expand its business
The rumor doesn’t come as a surprise as Coinbase has the funds to make it happen. The crypto exchange went public last month, becoming one of the most valuable crypto companies in the process. The company’s stock is currently changing hands at $233, and it has a market cap close to $50 billion. The exchange is also set to raise $1.25 billion by offering convertible notes to private investors.However, by acquiring an asset manager, Coinbase would be expanding its portfolio. The company majorly provides crypto exchange and custody services to retail and institutional investors at the moment.
Acquiring Osprey would see Coinbase offer asset management services to institutional clients. Osprey is already popular in the cryptocurrency space thanks to its Bitcoin Fund. The firm also launched a Polkadot Fund recently as it looks to expand its presence in the crypto space.
