Institutional clients gain access to the Coinbase Prime Brokerage
Leading cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is now a publicly-listed company, and it has been making changes to its operations over the past few weeks. The company is now expanding its Prime Brokerage service to now cover institutional investors.Coinbase announced earlier today that institutional clients can now enjoy its Prime Brokerage services. "Coinbase Prime will provide institutional clients access to pricing on 12 different regulated exchanges, including Coinbase, according to a statement Tuesday. The unit is seeking to function as an umbrella of services ranging from smart-order routing to detailed trade cost analysis reports and concierge support from account management and trading teams," Bloomberg reported.
The platform, known as Coinbase Prime, has been around for the past few years, but the company said this is the first time it has added the full stack of features, including the option to trade, store and borrow against cryptocurrency assets. According to the company, its institutional division had over 8000 clients and $122 billion in assets in March. Coinbase stated that the revamped Prime service would target big investors, banks and companies looking to add cryptocurrencies to their balance sheet.

Brett Tejpaul, head of institutional sales, trading, custody and Prime services, said the move opens the door for institutions clustering more and more of their services through Coinbase. He added that the service allows institutions to receive intra-day loans for trading. It also allows them to immediately access crypto funds they store in private wallets. "If you're carrying a billion in crypto and want to sell, there's typically a time delay to get it out of cold storage. But now you can sell it right away," Tejpaul added.The cryptocurrency exchange has been expanding its services to accommodate institutional investors. Coinbase acquired institutional cryptocurrency broker Tagomi last year and institutional custody firm Xapo in 2019. The cryptocurrency exchange remains one of the leading companies in the industry despite its stock price dropping by 34% since it went public.
