The problem is the presence of crypto malware in these torrent files, which is capable of bypassing the Windows Defender, the primary defense of a Windows computer against viruses,

Spider-Man: No Way Home is not safe for downloading via torrent, as ReasonLabs, a cybersecurity firm, says. The crypto malware "adds exclusions to Windows Defender, creates persistence, and spawns a watchdog process to maintain its activity," the firm explained."The official blog of the firm used a poem to summarize the effect of the virus, which goes as:
"Spider-miner, spider-miner, does whatever a miner can. Mine a coin, spawn a thread, Uses your electricity while you're in bed. Look out! Here comes the spider miner … !""The file identifies itself as 'spiderman_net_putidomoi.torrent.exe,' which translates from Russian to 'spiderman_no_wayhome.torrent.exe.' The origin of the file is most likely from a Russian torrenting website," confirmed the blog, hinting at the advanced techniques used by people with malicious intents.
Steer clear of torrents
The new Spider-Man movie definitely has won many hearts and is already the highest-grossing movie of the year 2021. However, it seems that getting your hands on an illegal torrent copy of the movie might prove harmful for you.Speaking on how the crypto malware works, ReasonLabs said that "the malware tries to stay away from examining eyes, by using 'legitimate' names for the files and processes that it creates; for example, it claims to be by Google and drops files with names like sihost64.exe, and injects to svchost.exe," and also said that this makes it quite difficult to detect from unprofessional eyes.
"Always check that the file extension matches the file you are expecting, e.g., in this case, a movie file should end with ".mp4", not ".exe." Try to gather information about the file, and always think twice before double-clicking on it," said ReasonLabs.
