But what even is RTFKT? Why did Nike buy them, and what does the future hold for Clone X???

What is RKFT?

Before you can begin to understand Clone X, you need to understand RTFKT. If you do a quick Google search, you'll learn that it is “the brand that makes virtual trainers.”

But the brand offers so much more than that, including impressive collabs, an innovative approach to augmented reality, and the option to ‘forge’ NFTs into real-life collectibles.

RTFKT was created by Benoit Pagotto, Steven Vasilev, and Chris Le, all of whom have a supposed history in gaming and fashion. The trio’s primary goal is to bring fashion, gaming, and the metaverse together. They’ve already done this with a handful of successful projects, such as:

The Meta Pigeon: A collaboration with Jeff Staple, which brought back a revamped metaverse version of the infamous Nike SB Dunk Low ‘Pigeon. (Sneakerheads know why this one is special.).

RTFKT PUNK PROJECT GEN 1: A collaboration with Crypto Punks. If you own a Crypto Punk, you can claim a custom sneaker. Essentially, your crypto punk now has its own pair of sneakers!

Feewocious RKFT NFT Collab: Feewocious is the 3rd-highest paid NFT artist in the world. This project is similar to the Meta Pigeon, except that holders also have the option to ‘forge’ their NFT to get a pair of sneakers in real life. We’ll talk more about forging later.

As you can see from these previous projects, these guys really are trendsetters when it comes to integrating fashion with NFTs. But this still doesn’t explain why Nike acquired the brand. I mean, don’t they already have enough shoes, and what can RTFKT really bring to the table that Nike doesn’t have already?

So WTF is Nike doing?

Without beating around the bush, Nike is really trying to stake its claim in the metaverse. They’ve already debuted ‘Nikeworld,’ in partnership with Roblox, and now they’ve acquired RTFKT, a company that brings fashion into the metaverse.

So the answer is quite simple. Nike is trying to be a part of this next fashion revolution, which is the metaverse. But did they make the right choice with Clone X? Are the designs even good?

“Cryptonary, you still haven’t told me what Clone X is!!”

Clone X is a set of 20,000 NFTs, that were made in collaboration with Takashi Murakami (the guy who’s worked with Louis Vuitton and Vogue). They are a part of the RKFT eco-system. The different DNAs on the design resemble the different styles you will get and be able to forge.

Clone X is like their previous projects on steroids. It will include clothing, as well as shoes. Think about it, instead of trying to buy cheap replicas of your NFT online, you’ll be able to get the real version for no added cost.

This includes: cool shoes, cool jackets, and cool shirts.

Essentially all the drip you would need!

So how does this work?

If you’re still wondering wtf is forging, then let us explain. ‘Forging’ in this case is essentially cloning an IRL version of the fashion your avatar has.

So if my NFT had a nice hoodie, I would be able to get an IRL version of that.

The way this is done is via a ‘forging event’ which, depending on the project, happens 2-3 times a year. And, crazily enough, this has actually been done by RFTKFT before.

However, forging has yet to become available for Clone X. And, and seeing as the Clone X designs are much more extravagant, many have voiced concerns on whether this project is actually forgeable.

However, now that Nike has acquired it, who knows, the possibilities may be endless!

So I’m just paying for merch?

The short answer is no. There are various other benefits you get when you acquire a Clone X. These include:

It’s metaverse ready: You know how 99% of projects say they're ‘metaverse ready’ but have nothing to show? Well, Clone X is different. Clone X has a Clone Meta Vault, which allows NFT holders to gain access to the 3D files needed to add their NFT to any metaverse space.

You can also use these NFTs in augmented reality, which has been done on IG and Snapchat. 

Clone x wearables:  Eventually, you will be able to customise your avatar. However, bear in mind that this hasn’t been done yet, so at the moment it is just hearsay. 

Special access:  You get access to the RFTKT community and events. Because this is a blue-chip NFT collection, the potential here is crazy. However, now that Nike has acquired the project, whether or not the team will have the same passion and deliver is a concern many have voiced.

The future?

In conclusion, Clone, X is a game-changer. It’s a concept that truly brings fashion into gaming and the metaverse. However, whether or not the metaverse itself will be a success remains to be seen. Even if the metaverse does come to fruition, some people believe that the project's hype will die down or that future competitors will drive down its value.

With that in mind, is it safe to bet on something people are uncertain about?
