Tutorial: Orbiter Finance (What It Is & How It Works)
Orbiter Finance is a decentralised cross-rollup bridge that allows users to transfer assets between Ethereum Layer 1 and Layer 2s (e.g. zkSync, Arbitrum & Optimism) with low gas fees and quick transaction speeds.
How does it work?
In very basic terms, Orbiter has a ‘Sender’ and a ‘Maker’. The Maker provides liquidity for the Sender. The Sender will initiate a transfer on the Source Network, and the Maker will send it back to the Sender on the Target Network. If there is a dispute in this process, Orbiter’s security model ensures that the Sender will be able to retrieve the assets and additional compensation. How to Use Orbiter Finance?

Connecting your wallet
MetaMask is the only wallet currently supported by Orbiter. Click here for our beginner’s tutorial on MetaMask. Simply click ‘connect’ and approve the connection.
Transferring Assets
First, select the token you would like to send. Currently, it is only possible to transfer ETH, USDC and USDT.
Next, select the network you are transferring from and the network you want to transfer to. Your token balance on both of these networks will be displayed. After this, simply enter the amount you want to send. Note that in the current Alpha phase of Orbiter, each token has a minimum transfer amount.
Click ‘send’ to proceed with the transaction.
On the following screen, you will be presented with more details of the transaction. This includes the withholding fee, which is used to pay the gas fee on the destination network (in this case, zkSync). Orbiter also charges a trading fee of 0.2 or 0.3 percent of the transaction amount.
Here you also have the security code for your transaction. This is used to reclaim assets in the event that there is a dispute between the Maker and the Sender.
Once you click ‘confirm and send’, you will be prompted to sign and approve the transactions in your wallet.
You can view your transaction by clicking on either network.
