Deutsche Telekom invests in the future of decentralized finance
Deutsche Telekom AG, Europe’s largest telecommunications company, revealed that it had invested in the public blockchain network Celo. The company invested in the blockchain network by buying a significant amount of Celo’s native asset, CELO.“Deutsche Telekom is investing in the future of the decentralized financial economy – with a significant purchase of Celo’s native asset (CELO). Celo is an open-source blockchain ecosystem focused on making decentralized financial (DeFi) systems and tools accessible to anyone with a smartphone.” the press release read.
Deutsche Telekom owns and operates T-Mobile. In fact, it will become the first telecommunications company to join the global Celo Alliance for Prosperity as a result of the new relationship. Adel Al-Saleh, a member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Telekom AG, and CEO of T-System, said that the company’s investment in Celo, combined with their infrastructure operated by T-Systems, allows them a strategic approach towards participating in a public blockchain network.
Partnership will boost cloud infrastructure
The partnership means that Deutsche Telekom can secure the Celo network with its investment and cloud infrastructure. Hence, this will ensure that user onboarding, which will actively guide customers to adopt and find value in the new product, continues to grow. Similarly, it will allow use-case development which can help specify the system's requirements and behaviors as it responds to users.To that end, Deutsche Telekom said its intention was to operate infrastructure across the Celo ecosystem. "To do so, Deutsche Telekom’s subsidiary T-Systems MMS will operate as a validator utilizing the Open Telekom Cloud (OTC). The OTC fulfills the strict security and compliance requirements of the European regulatory framework, ensuring secure financial services are available via smartphone worldwide.”, the statement read.
The telecom giant also intends to launch its SMS API. This will allow validators to send verification text messages using the Deutsche Telekom service. The company believes that by increasing the diversity of SMS providers on the Celo platform, they can improve the security and reliability of the decentralized phone verification protocol. This is crucial to making the Celo blockchain easy to use.

An increasing number of traditional companies are betting on blockchain networks. For example, over the past few years, several businesses in the finance, telecoms, and supply chain have invested in cryptocurrency and blockchain companies.Rene Reinsberg, the co-founder of Celo, expressed his excitement for the partnership with Deutsche Telekom.
