Disney patents 'a virtual-world simulator' for theme park Metaverse
Disney, the well-known entertainment firm, has decided to enter the Metaverse with the patent of a 'virtual-world simulator.' The patent was approved in the last week of December 2021 and would create personalized interactive experiences for theme park visitors.

Disney has secured the patent that will allow a headset-free experience for the theme park visitors via Augmented Reality or AR. The technology will work by projecting personalized 3D objects onto the nearby physical spaces like walls and other objects in the theme park.As per the patent, "a virtual-world simulator includes a computing platform having a hardware processor and a memory storing a software code, a tracking system communicatively coupled to the computing platform, and a projection device communicatively coupled to the computing platform."
The approved patent was initially filed by Disney to the United States Patent and Trademark Office in July 2020.
Blend of physical and virtual objects
Metaverse has mainly been associated with the internet and headsets being used to traverse the virtual world. However, Disney has other plans, and the firm is looking to build a "virtual-world simulator in a real-world venue."This means that the Disney theme park Metaverse will include real-world features as well as AR features. How they plan to pull it off is yet to be revealed.
"Our efforts to date are merely a prologue to a time when we'll be able to connect the physical and digital worlds even more closely, allowing for storytelling without boundaries in our own Disney metaverse," said CEO Bob Chapek at the fourth-quarter earnings call.However, Disney plans to tell various stories through the simulator, but officials told The LA Times that the firm has "no current plans" to use the simulator. On the other hand, Samsung has already launched a store in the Decentraland Metaverse.
