The New Contender: Polkadot Polkadot is a sharded network that allows interoperability between blockchains. Its creator Gavin Wood, also the founder of the Web3 Foundation, has been working on Polkadot since late-2016. Prior to this project he has helped co-create the Ethereum protocol and was the co-founder and CTO. Earlier this year, the blockchain went live and transactions begun getting processed though the network’s native asset “DOT” was not yet transferrable.
DOT After a much long wait and years of development, DOT tokens have become transferrable and early buyers are now able to access/transfer/trade a portion of their holdings. Over $140 million were raised for this project with pre-sales. Multiple exchanges listed them, one of which is Kraken which will also accept staking. Prior to them becoming legally transferrable, Huobi had listed a spot market for the asset which was questionable. FTX took advantage of that opportunity and used that as an anchor for pricing derivatives which do not deal with the underlying asset and kept them under the legal scope and allowed many to speculate on the price of DOT.
Redenomination With a maximum supply of 10,000,000 DOTs investors may be happy but users would not be as they’d need to deal with very small fractions of a DOT to pay for fees and other overall network usage. For that reason, a vote was passed for DOTs to undergo a 1:100 redenomination which would solve that problem and increase the maximum supply to 1,000,000,000 DOTs.
