Dubai's crypto regulator will create a HQ in The Sandbox
On Tuesday, Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) revealed plans to establish a metaverse headquarters in the virtual world, The Sandbox.
Dubai's regulator has entered the metaverse
The authority has been tight-lipped about the role of its "MetaHQ," but as the world's first regulator to make its debut in the metaverse, it wants to establish an open space where everyone can access the regulator their virtual headquarters as well as facilitate collaborative engagement between global Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs), industry thought leaders, and international regulatory authorities.The location of the headquarters within The Sandbox has not yet been revealed. Still, the organization hopes to encourage younger licensees to enter the metaverse and openly share knowledge and experiences with consumers and peer regulators to raise awareness, enable safe adoption, and drive global interoperability.
The role of the VARA
VARA was established in early March to develop an advanced legal framework and regulatory system for virtual assets in Dubai and the rest of the UAE. It also regulates the activities of custodians and asset managers in the cryptocurrency space. Firms that wish to operate in the UAE must have a business presence in-country and obtain a crypto license from VARA.Dubai, like Abu Dhabi and the rest of the United Arab Emirates, has been attempting to attract the crypto industry, in part by establishing a clear legislative framework within which crypto firms can operate, and these kinds of moves demonstrate that their regulator is active in crypto itself and that their country is friendly toward it.
