FBI issues alerts of rising crypto-based scams in Valentine week
The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI, has issued an alert wherein the authority stated that there is a rise in the number of crypto-based scams during Valentine Week, which goes from 7th Feb to 14th Feb. The firm had issued the alert in the San Francisco Bay Area, a region surrounding San Francisco, San Pablo, and Suisun Bay estuaries.

The FBI issued the alert via an official website of the US government. The FBI San Francisco field office said in the alert that 'romance scams' were quite popular in the area. As per the official reports, "the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) showed that victims within the FBI San Francisco division's territory lost more than $64 million to romance scams compared to just over $35 million in 2020. IC3 received 742 complaints within the Northern District of California last year compared to 720 in 2020 and 526 in 2019.""Romance scam victims were reported in every county within the FBI San Francisco division's territory except one last year. The county with the highest victim reporting and dollar amount loss was Santa Clara County, followed by San Francisco County and Alameda County."There are a number of scams that have affected a wider age group in the past years. However, it is to be noted that older adults are more targeted by scammers. In 2021, people 60 years and older were scammed in significant numbers. Recently, the FBI seized 39.89138522 Bitcoin from an Exodus wallet worth $1.9 million.
Romance scams
The FBI San Francisco has noted rising levels of romance scams wherein scammers win the trust of individuals and ask them to invest in cryptocurrencies from where the scammers direct the victims to a fake website. For the first time, the scammers allow the investors to withdraw their crypto with profit. However, the scammer advises the victim to invest a higher amount. When the victim withdraws funds again, the scammers talk about a number of reasons why this cannot happen.
