FC Barcelona wants to launch its own cryptocurrency
According to a report from ESPN, the Spanish football club FC Barcelona is planning to launch a cryptocurrency.
FC Barcelona is diving into the crypto space
The club has rejected offers to be associated with crypto companies because it wants to develop its cryptocurrency and metaverse, Joan Laporta said this week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. At this stage, however, it is unclear what Barcelona's cryptocurrency will be used for, whether it will be some sort of fan token or a means of payment for tickets and fan merchandise.Previously, Barcelona terminated a contract with Ownix, the NFT token marketplace that had become one of the club's digital partners just this month. The contract was terminated after the arrest of Moshe Hogeg, who served as a consultant for the partnership, for cryptocurrency fraud, but Laporta said the club will still launch a series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) soon.
