Fidelity will allow inclusion of Bitcoin in 401(k) Accounts
As per a report from the New York Times, Fidelity Investments, an American multinational financial services corporation that is also the largest provider of 401(k)s in the U.S., will allow customers to put their retirement funds into Bitcoin, the world's biggest cryptocurrency. However, their employers must agree to the same as well.
Fidelity plans to expose millions of customers to Bitcoin
Fidelity plans to allow millions of customers to invest directly in Bitcoin without having to go through the trouble of opening an account in a cryptocurrency exchange. The feature will be implemented through its new digital assets account. The fee for the account owners will be between 0.75 percent and 0.90 percent of the assets, which will also depend on a variety of other factors like the employer and the amount invested. Moreover, an additional trading fee will also be applicable for digital assets account openers which remain undisclosed for now but will be "competitively priced."We started to hear a growing interest from plan sponsors, organically, as to how could Bitcoin or how could digital assets be offered in a retirement plan," Dave Gray, head of the workplace retirement offerings and platforms at Fidelity Investments, said in an interview.
MicroStrategy has already signed up
Interestingly, one of the first firms to actually sign up includes MicroStrategy, the firm backed by Bitcoin-supporter Micheal Saylor, as per Mr. Gray. Furthermore, Fidelity is already in discussion with other employers. Just like the traditional mutual funds, the digital assets account will also be integrated into the 401(k) investment menu by the middle of the year.Fidelity, which recently launched crypto and metaverse-based ETFs, also added that users could fix a percentage of their funds to be allocated to Bitcoin, but the ceiling will be decided by the employer. For now, the investment firm will not allow more than 20% of the total funds, but this might change in the near future.
