Former Mt. Gox CEO re-enters the blockchain scene
The infamous Mt. Gox exchange, accounting for over 70% of all Bitcoin transactions in 2013, is known for suffering the biggest Bitcoin heist of all time worth 850,000BTCs. One month after filing for bankruptcy in Japan, where the exchange was based, 200,000BTCs were recovered and later put in control of trustees to manage the bankruptcy proceedings.
Frenchman Mark Karpeles purchased Mt. Gox from Jed McCaleb in 2010 in exchange for 50% of the profits for the first 6 months and a 12% equity from that point onwards. Karpeles served as the CEO of the exchange and was charged with embezzlement after the major loss to which he pled innocent. In March 2019, he was cleared of embezzlement charges by a Japanese court. Nonetheless, he was charged with 2.5 years suspension for electronic record tampering, charges to which he has appealed.
Wednesday, Karpeles told Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan reporters he was ready to start “from zero” with a new blockchain project. He is currently the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at an IT company called Tristan Technologies. The company specialises in privacy protection and is aiming to create an operating system much faster than the ones used today.
Japanese culture was always an area of interest for Karpeles, especially due to Japanese games and animation. For that reason, he chose to move when he was only 20 years old. He was quoted saying “my love for Japan has not changed” and that “Japan used to be engineering superpower in terms of its PCs but right now, taking the cloud, for example, it is the U.S. that dominates. But still I believe in the potential Japan has and I would like to develop that”.
