Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht has just sold his first NFT collection for $6.2 million. The funds will be used to support the Free Ross campaign and help prisoners meet their families.

FreeRossDAO raised funds in ETH, to win the NFT auction of Ross Ulbricht, founder of Silk Road. The DAO succeeded in buying the artwork at auction for $6.2 million. FreeRossDAO raised 1500 ETH and won the auction with a bid of 1446 ETH. The remaining contributions will be sent to the FreeRossDAO treasury, which will be governed by donors.FreeRossDAO donors were promised ROSS tokens representing governance rights and the NFT collection's fractional ownership. Notable donors to FreeRossDAO included personal friends of Ulbricht and PleasrDAO, who donated 240 ETH and promised to continue donating if FreeRossDAO was outbid at the auction. Ulbricht thanked those who supported his NFT collection during the auction. "I am so moved by what is happening with the NFT auction right now," he wrote in a tweet on December 6th.
Who is Ross Ulbricht?
Ross Ulbricht is known for running a darknet marketplace called Silk Road, which mainly sold illegal drugs. Ulbricht, who operated under the pseudonym "Dread Pirate Roberts," founded Silk Road in 2011 at the age of 26 and ran the business until FBI shut it down in 2013. The marketplace primarily served to buy and sell drugs using Bitcoin. The marketplace enjoyed great popularity and generated a turnover of 9,519,664 Bitcoin.His supporters see him as a pioneer who introduced people to bitcoin when it was still in its infancy. Ulbricht was sentenced in 2015 to two life terms and 40 years in prison without the possibility of parole. FreeRossDAO's goals were clear. The first goal was to free Ross Ulbricht and "advance prison reform," but also to share Ulbricht's work with the world by allowing people to own some of it by fractionalizing the collection.
