Lydia wants to expand into other European countries
According to a report from TechCrunch, the fintech super app has raised $100 million in a round with existing investors such as Tencent, Accel, and Founders Future and new investors such as Dragoneer and Echo Street investing in the start-up. This has resulted in the company being valued at more than $1 billion reaching unicorn status. The company plans to use the fresh funding to expand to other European countries and hire over 800 people in the next three years.Lydia has attracted 5.5 million users so far. More importantly, a third of French people between 18 and 35 have a Lydia account. And the startup is now looking to follow the same path in other European countries. Cyril Chiche, co-founder and CEO of Lydia, told TechCrunch that he hopes 10 million European customers will use Lydia as their primary account by 2025.
What is Lydia?
Lydia started as a peer-to-peer payment app. Once you enter your debit card and banking information, you could send and receive mobile payments to other Lydia users. The app has evolved significantly over the past few years, adding various features and financial products. Lydia now offers loans and savings products and recently partnered with Bitpanda to leverage the Austrian trading company's white-label offering and add fractional share and cryptocurrency trading as a feature.By offering additional products on top of peer-to-peer payments, Lydia aims to increase engagement. If you want to send and receive a handful of payments with the app, everything is free, but if you want to go further, the company offers premium subscriptions. Last December, the startup also raised money when it secured an $86 million Series B extension.
