Goldman Sachs diving deep into the crypto market
As per a report by Bloomberg, Goldman Sachs is intensifying its participation in assisting institutions trade cryptocurrency derivatives.These so-called bilateral options enable trades to be better customizable to the crypto holders such as Bitcoin miners and hedge funds can boost their yields or hedge risks involved.
Goldman Sachs has already been offering Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) options and futures trading. In 2021, the banking giant opened up non-deliverable forwards trading, a derivative linked with BTC price that pays out in cash.
In a December event, Goldman's global head of crypto trading, Andrei Kazantsev, said that the firm has observed demand for derivative-type hedging and that the emergence of an options market will be the next major step. To enable larger deals, Goldman offers liquidity and takes risks for its clients, he said.
A few are dominating
When exploration of such offerings is still in its infancy in the current market conditions, only a few Wall Street banks are ruling them. Other than Goldman Sachs, the market of these kinds of bilateral customizable options have been dominated by crypto-native companies like Galaxy Digital Holdings Ltd., Genesis Global Trading Inc., and GSR. Recently, traditional Capital market giant DRW Holdings LLC also entered into the space as a liquidity provider.On the other hand, multiple big banks are still not active in the crypto spot market because of the unclear regulatory stance, along with internal compliance process complexities and Know Your Customer or KYC regulations.
