Hong Kong police arrest 24-year-old over a rare ‘in-person’ crypto theft
Hong Kong police have apprehended a 24-year-old man accused of stealing 1.5 million HK dollars which is around $191,000 in US dollars. As per the official Facebook post from the authorities, this action is punishable under law.
A rare case in Hong Kong
This was a rare case seen in Hong Kong because the accused had allegedly lured the victim and his two colleagues into a meeting room, where they transferred him the funds in an e-wallet. The meeting room was present in a shop in Tsim Sha Tsui where this rare case of an in-person crypto scam was implemented.Pretending to bring cash for the victim, the suspect left the premises, and to their surprise, the victim and his colleagues were locked in the meeting room. The victim called the Hong Kong police, who were able to track the suspect on Tuesday in Sham Shui Po in northern Kowloon.
Inspector Tong Sin-tung of the Yau Tsim criminal investigation unit said that the suspect was tracked down with the help of security cameras. Tong learned that the shop was rented for HK$4,000 a few months ago by a shell company.
Further arrests possible
The Hong Kong police believe that the suspect had aliases and that further arrests are possible in the near future. The shop set by the shell company had no important item, as per Tong.“Inside the shop, the banknote counter was not connected to electricity and what looked like computers were just empty cases,” she said.The Hong Kong police have also reached out to the public to stay alert when going outside and not to share personal details with any random person.
It is important to note that cryptocurrency crimes tend to fall into three categories: using digital currencies to launder money, robbing buyers or sellers during face-to-face transactions, or investment scams, in which purported sellers disappear after taking the victim’s money.
