How did today's Fed decision affect the crypto market?
The Federal Reserve said Wednesday that it will keep interest rates near zero, but how did that affect the crypto market?
The rates are unchanged
The benchmark U.S. short-term interest rate will remain in its current range of 0% to 0.25%, according to a statement from the Fed's monetary policy body, the FOMC. "With inflation well above 2% and a strong labour market, the Committee expects it will soon be appropriate to raise the target range for the federal funds rate," the Fed said in a statement after the two-day, closed-door meeting.The Fed's latest decision comes when the central bank has already scaled back its asset purchase program. Under that program, tens of billions of dollars in new money have been made available each month to buy government bonds and mortgage securities. That program is scheduled to end as early as March, and many traders and economists expect the Fed to begin raising interest rates at its meeting this month.
How has this affected the crypto market?
Bitcoin reacted quite positively to the announcement, rising 2.5% since the FED decision and trading at around $38,900 immediately afterward. However, as with most events, some traders began to quickly sell off the news, causing Bitcoin to fall back to $37,755. Although Bitcoin saw a slight positive movement today, it had a sharp decline earlier in the month, heavily influenced by the Fed's plans to tighten monetary policy, and is still down almost 10% on a weekly basis.Some analysts even believe that Fed pressure could hurt Bitcoin returns in 2022, as they believe the Fed is moving much faster than they once expected. Analysts also speculate that the Fed could start raising rates by half a percentage point in March, as Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has stated that there is plenty of room for rate hikes.
