Intel will unveil its 'Bonanza Mine' ASIC chip
This year, Intel has scheduled a presentation in the 'Highlighted Chip Releases' category to unveil a new "Bonanza Mine" processor, a chip described as an "ultra-low- voltage, energy-efficient Bitcoin mining ASIC." ASIC stands for application-specific integrated circuits suited for number crunching in crypto mining.The move means the company will compete directly with Bitmain and MicroBT in the ASIC market for bitcoin mining. It was no surprise that Intel would enter this sector. The first signs of Intel's interest in mining hardware surfaced in 2018 in the form of a patent for a specialized processing system that uses an optimized SHA -256 datapath (a cryptographic algorithm) for high-performance Bitcoin mining.
Chip will be separate from graphics processors
In a live stream in late December, GPU head Raja Koduri said the company is working on specialized crypto-mining hardware and technology. Koduri confirmed that the new chip would be completely independent of the graphics processing units (GPUs), which will be responsible for graphic design and gaming.The company will launch its first line of discrete graphics cards for gaming called Intel Arc Alchemist later this year, competing against companies like Nvidia and AMD in a market that desperately needs more players. Gamers are already suffering from crypto miners as a global shortage of graphics cards, triggered in part by the COVID -19 pandemic, has driven up prices.
