Kickstarter wants to decentralize
Kickstarter is launching a new organization called Kickstarter PBC, which is responsible for building an open-source protocol that imitates the functionality of Kickstarter's core platform, but in a decentralized way. The protocol will run on the carbon-negative blockchain platform Celo and will be available for collaborators, contributors, and even crowdfunding competitors to build on and use.The company also announced that it will establish an "independent governance lab" which will publish research and engage with the community on the topic of protocol governance. Once the independent organization has completed all required preparations, Kickstarter will migrate its website to the new infrastructure. The company said users would not feel any difference, even though Kickstarter will switch the technology to a decentralized model. The development of the new protocol will start in the first quarter of 2022, and Kickstarter expects to transition its site to the protocol sometime in 2022.

Celo is a platform that acts as a global payment infrastructure for cryptocurrencies and is aimed at mobile users. Many companies have received negative feedback from their users about using proof-of-work blockchains like Ethereum due to environmental concerns. For this reason, Kickstarter chose Celo because it uses a less energy-intensive consensus mechanism that the team behind it calls "carbon-negative."Kickstarter is not the only traditional tech company looking to create a new decentralized and open-source platform. Twitter is working on bluesky, an attempt to develop a decentralized protocol for social media. While these two companies were pioneers on the internet when they were founded, it seems that they need to take it a step further by using decentralized, autonomous organizations to stay ahead of innovation.
