Gasparino said Kraken would go public via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) or a more traditional initial public offering (IPO). "Kraken execs eying going public possibly through a SPAC or IPO possibly sometime next year as online crypto exchange's customer growth ramps up; industry sources expect a raft of crypto SPACs this summer and with that, much more regulatory scrutiny more now," he said.
Earlier this month, Kraken CEO Jesse Powell said the exchange would go public next year, but there are no guarantees. Powell told Bloomberg TV that Kraken would only go public for the right price, as he considers $10 billion a low valuation.
Cryptocurrency exchanges have recorded massive growth over the past few years, and a few of them are already listed on stock markets. However, no major crypto exchange in the United States is currently listed on a stock market.
Coinbase is opting for a direct listing, and the company is currently valued at over $70 billion, making it one of the most valuable cryptocurrency entities in the world. eToro, on the other hand, is choosing to go public via a SPAC merger, which it announced yesterday.
