Marathon Digital buys record Antminers: Set to expand capacity by 600%
Marathon Digital has bought a considerable number of Bitcoin mining rigs, the Antminer S19 XP (140 TH/s), from Bitmain, a privately owned company headquartered in Beijing, China. Trading on NASDAQ as MARA, the firm announced on Thursday that the firm's total mining capacity would include 199,000 BTC miners.
Marathon Digital to receive miners between July and December 2022
The official statement from the Vegas-based Marathon Digital states that the firm will receive as much as 199,000 Bitcoin miners between July 2022 and December 2022. This marks the largest order of Antminer S10 XP from Bitmain, which had recently closed off its supply to Chinese customers."Marathon will be upgrading a portion of its mining fleet with the latest mining hardware to increase the overall efficiency of the Company's operations," said the announcement.Once the Marathon Digital Antminer S19 XPs are operational, the firm will be one of the biggest mining companies in the world, contributing around 23.3 exa-hashes per second, a 600% increase in the capacity as it currently produces 3.2 exa-hashes per second.
The CEO of the firm, Fred Thiel, said that the company was "uniquely positioned to place the largest single order of S19 XPs, in terms of total hash rate BITMAIN has ever received."
Revised numbers
Marathon Digital had earlier predicted in October that the firm would hold 133,000 Bitcoin miners who would work together to generate around 13.3 exa-hashes per second once the miners are fully operational.On the other hand, Bitmain said that it is "pleased to again support their progress with this order for our S19 XPs, which are among the most powerful and efficient bitcoin miners available today.
"We believe we have established Marathon as one of the leading bitcoin miners in North America and potentially the largest known miner in the world. We would like to thank the team at BITMAIN for helping us realize this objective," said Marathon Digital.
