Metaverse 'sounds like more marketing than reality,' said Elon Musk
The metaverse concept sounds intriguing to many investors who have put their money on promising platforms like The Sandbox and Decentraland. On the other hand, the world's richest man, who believes that Bitcoin is better as a store of value, said that he doesn't see this concept of VR or virtual reality promising in the near future.
Metaverse is just marketing
Metaverse is one of the biggest industries that have seen widespread adoption this year, with many investors claiming it to be the future world of meetings and marketplaces. However, Musk said in his interview that he doesn't "see someone strapping a friggin' screen to their face all day," which he believes is the ultimate goal of the metaverse or virtual reality."I don't know if I necessarily buy into this metaverse stuff, although people talk to me a lot about it," said Musk in his interview on the Babylon Bee YouTube channel.Elon further said that he doesn't see a "compelling metaverse situation" and that "Web 3 sounds like more marketing than reality." He remained critical of this new industry that is growing at a very fast pace.
"I don't get it, and maybe I will, but I don't get it yet," Musk said.
Neuralink is better
Elon Musk, who is the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, also formed a neurotechnology company developing implantable brain-machine interfaces called Neuralink. In the interview, Musk said that "a sophisticated Neuralink could put you fully into virtual reality," which is what the task of VR or the metaverse is.Musk mentioned earlier this year that the first Neuralink product would enable people with paralysis to use their smartphones in a more efficient way than a normal person would. Describing the product, Musk said that "the device is implanted flush with skull & charges wirelessly."
Although it is too late to comment on the possible growth of the metaverse or Neuralink, Elon Musk's statement reveals that he doesn't believe in the potential of the metaverse.
