OpenSea Discord server hacked: Scam NFTs were promoted
NFT-related hacks are becoming a common occurrence, and the Wild West definitely needs some order. The world's largest NFT marketplace, OpenSea, saw its Discord server get hacked. The hackers gained access to the server to promote fake NFT collections in order to phish users into losing their valuable non-fungible tokes.
OpenSea Discord users in trouble
OpenSea Discord got hacked, and the NFT marketplace confirmed this development in a Twitter post on May 6, 2022, 2:13 PM UTC. "We are currently investigating a potential vulnerability in our Discord, please do not click on any links in the Discord," said the tweet from the NFT marketplace.While OpenSea continues to work out the details and investigate the harm done, they have asked all the users to be cautious. A number of people from the crypto community flagged the possibility of the hack as the founder of Sentinel, a Discord and crypto threat mitigation system powered by AI, and the community, @Serpent, was among the first to confirm the hack.
Blockchain security firm PeckShield also notified the crypto community of the Discord exploit.
As per images circulated of the hacked Discord server of OpenSea, there was a message that the NFT marketplace had partnered with YouTube "to bring their community into the NFT Space." The users were then redirected to a phishing link where they would be able to mint "YouTube Genesis Mint Pass."
Blue-chip Discord compromises
As per a previous report from Cryptonary, the Discord channel of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) was also briefly compromised, followed by the Doodles' server. Similar events had occurred wherein the scammers posted fake links to phishing websites and promoted fake airdrops of NFT collections.
