Poly Network attacker returns $256 million of the stolen funds
The hacker behind the $611 million Poly Network exploit has decided to return the stolen crypto assets - less than a day after the hack.

The hacker has right now sent back $256 million in tokens out of the haul. Seven minutes before sending the first transaction, The hacker created a token labeled "The hacker is ready to surrender" and sent that token to the specified polygon address. Then they decided to send back $1 million in USDC on the Polygon blockchain. They did this in three transactions with gradually increasing amounts (10, 10,000, and 1 million). They also returned 23.8 BTCB ($1.1 million), a bitcoin-pegged token on Binance Smart Chain, and 259.7 billion Shiba-Inu tokens (SHIBA) worth $2 million and $600,000 in FEI, a stable coin.A few hours later, after talking to the team at Poly Network in encrypted messages, the hacker sent back almost all the assets at Binance Smart Chain. They sent over 1,000 more BTCB ($46.4 million), 26,629 ETH ($86 million), and $119 million in the stable coin BUSD. The only assets remaining on this chain are 6,613 BNB ($2.6 million).
Biggest DeFi hack to date
The attacker's decision came less than a day after the initial exploit, the largest DeFi hack in history. Since then, Tether was the only company quick enough to blacklist about $33 million worth of stolen USDT on Ethereum. The stolen assets included $273 million in Ethereum tokens, $253 million in tokens on Binance Smart Chain, and $85 million in USDC on the Polygon network.The reason the hacker decided to return the assets appears to be a message from blockchain security firm Slowmist, they sent out a message saying it had already tracked down the attacker: ID. The company claims to know his email address, IP information and the fingerprint of his device.
