RBI, the central bank of India, recommends a basic CBDC version
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced a new notice, laying down a basic version of the central bank digital currency or CBDC. While the current status of the crypto bill remains uncertain, the proposition of a basic CBDC comes before the implementation of a fully-fledged one.
RBI outlines CBDC
RBI has come up with a number of guidelines for a CBDC via a report which was titled "Trend and Progress of Banking in India 2020-21" which was released on Tuesday. The report caught the attention of several local media outlets and citizens as well.Defining a CBDC, the report said that "in its basic form, a central bank digital currency (CBDC), provides a safe, robust, and convenient alternative to physical cash. Depending on various design choices, it can also assume the complex form of a financial instrument."
"In comparison with existing forms of money, it can offer benefits to users in terms of liquidity, scalability, acceptance, ease of transactions with anonymity and faster settlement," further added the RBI report.

As per the RBI report, India will be following the direction of several nations which are planning to introduce a CBDC into their financial system, including entire Europe. The report also stated that it is important to focus on the designing elements of the Indian CBDC, i.e., if it'll be available for retail use or wholesale use.RBI also said that another important factor in the distribution of CBDCs is if the central bank should distribute them or if the commercial banks should also be given the authority to do the same.
"India’s progress in payment systems will provide a useful backbone to make a state-of-the-art CBDC available to its citizens and financial institutions," RBI said.The RBI believes that the CBDCs should "adopt basic models initially, and test comprehensively so that they have minimal impact on monetary policy and the banking system."
