As the report from Reuters confirms, the central bank of Russia believes that cryptocurrencies are a threat to “financial stability, citizens' wellbeing and its monetary policy sovereignty.”Russia has been quite actively discussing crypto for years but hasn’t been able to make a solid decision on the matter. The country gave legal status to these blockchain-based assets in 2020 but banned their use for payments.
As per Reuters, the central bank of Russia believes that the “speculative demand primarily determined cryptocurrencies' rapid growth and that they carried characteristics of a financial pyramid, warning of potential bubbles in the market, threatening financial stability and citizens.”
Furthermore, in its proposal, the central bank of Russia forbade financial institutions from taking part in cryptocurrencies and asked for the development of a mechanism to block the buying and selling of crypto for fiat currencies.
Elizaveta Danilova, head of the central bank's financial stability department confirmed that ‘restrictions on owning cryptocurrency are not envisaged.’
