SEC expands its Cyber Unit to protect investors in crypto markets
As per a recent announcement by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), it has allocated 20 additional positions to the unit responsible for protecting investors in crypto markets from the underlying cyber-related threats.
SEC expands Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit
The newly renamed Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit (previously called the Cyber Unit) in the Division of Enforcement will focus on investigating securities law violations in the industry. It aims to grow to 50 dedicated positions in the coming days.SEC chair Gary Gensler said that the United States has the most significant capital markets because "investors have faith in them." He underscored the importance of dedicating more resources to "protect" investors.
"By nearly doubling the size of this key unit, the SEC will be better equipped to police wrongdoing in the crypto markets while continuing to identify disclosure and controls issues with respect to cybersecurity."Since its inception in 2017, the unit has investigated more than 80 cases involving fraudulent and unlicensed crypto-asset offerings and platforms, culminating in over $2 billion in monetary relief. The announcement reveals that the expansion of the Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit will draw on the agency's experience to protect investors in the crypto markets. It will focus on securities law violations linked to crypto offerings, crypto exchanges, crypto lending and staking products, DeFi platforms, NFTs, and stablecoins.
Regulatory clarity for crypto markets
Last year, Gensler compared Stablecoins with Casino poker chips. Recently, he suggested that the SEC's traditional asset investor protections should also apply to investors in crypto markets. Using a "come in and talk to us" strategy, Gensler has encouraged crypto firms with securities to register to protect investors.Several crypto companies have expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of regulatory clarity in the region, which several institutions, including the SEC, influence.
