S&P Dow Jones Indices launches its cryptocurrency broad digital market index

S&P Dow Jones has launched a new cryptocurrency index that tracks the performance of over 240 cryptocurrencies, including some of the leading coins in the market.

S&P Dow Jones has announced earlier today that its Cryptocurrency Broad Digital Market (BDM) Index is now live. The index tracks the performance of over 240 cryptocurrencies, making it easier for institutions to gain information about the coins.

In a press release earlier today, S&P Dow Jones said, "S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI), the world's leading index provider, announced today the launch of its latest cryptocurrency indices including the new S&P Cryptocurrency Broad Digital Market (BDM) Index. The BDM provides a wide performance snapshot of the cryptocurrency market and includes more than 240 coins at launch."

S&P expands its cryptocurrency coverage

According to the firm, the newly launched index is part of an expansion of its recently launched series of digital asset benchmarks, the S&P Digital Market Indices. In addition to the S&P Cryptocurrency Broad Digital Market (BDM) Index, the firm also launched four other crypto indices.

They are S&P Cryptocurrency LargeCap Index, S&P Cryptocurrency BDM Ex-MegaCap Index, S&P Cryptocurrency BDM Ex-LargeCap Index and S&P Cryptocurrency LargeCap Ex-MegaCap Index. These new indices join the three existing ones (S&P Bitcoin Index, S&P Ethereum Index, and S&P Cryptocurrency MegaCap Index.)

The adoption comes despite the cryptocurrency market currently being in a bearish market. Bitcoin's price remains over 40% down from its all-time high.
