On Wednesday 15th of July, multiple influential accounts with very large followings had been compromised. All of the compromised accounts, with a combined following in the hundreds of millions, shared and pinned the same tweet to their profile about having partnered with a (fake) charity/organisation called “Crypto For Health” and they are giving back 5,000BTC to the “community”.
17 Year Old Mastermind
The mastermind behind this hack turned out to be a 17 year old from Tampa named: Graham Ivan Clark. He appeared in front of the judge and had his bail set at $725,000. For reference, the amount he stole via the hack was just shy of $120,000. Of course his bail must be paid with legitimately obtained money to which the prosecutor commented: "Because, based upon the conduct of this defendant, I believe it’s appropriate to assume that every single penny that this defendant has access to is by ill-gotten gains."
$3 Million in Bitcoin
The defense attorney stated that the 17 year old was subject to an investigation last year where authorities seized 400BTC and $15,000 in cash. Afterwards 300BTC and the cash were returned to him and the argument given by Clark's attorney was: "I can think of no greater indication of legitimacy than law enforcement giving the money back."
Why only 300BTC were returned and not 400BTC remains unknown, however the former is worth north of $3 million today.
