'There's a lot to be done,' SEC Chair comments on crypto regulation
The Chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Gary Gensler, has talked about cryptocurrencies and related investments at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority's annual conference in Washington on Monday. Gensler is known for adopting a pragmatic approach to cryptocurrencies, as clear from his recent statements.
SEC Chair believes in firm regulations
As per a report from Reuters, SEC Chair pointed out that crypto investors who are making their investments in these blockchain-based digital assets do not get 'the disclosures they get when they make other asset purchases around things like whether the trading platform they are using is actually trading against them, or whether they actually own the assets they store in digital wallets.'"We have this basic bargain: You, the investing public, can make your choices about the risk you take, but there is supposed to be full and fair disclosure, and people are not supposed to lie to you," the SEC Chair added in his statement.Additionally, the SEC Chair also pointed out that basic market principles absent in the crypto world like "anti-fraud, anti-manipulation, making sure there's not front-running, making sure an order book is actually real and not made up" are absent and need to be immediately set up to secure investors.
"There's a lot to be done here, and in the meantime, the investing public is not that well protected," Gensler said, hinting at strict regulations being constructed.
Gensler asks for the centralization of exchanges
As reported by Cryptonary in December 2021, Gensler spoke on cryptocurrency adoption at the DACOM Summit, wherein he confirmed that it is impossible for crypto exchanges to evade regulatory oversight and also called for mutual cooperation and peaceful existence for crypto services providers across the United States and the world.
