TP ICAP partners Fidelity and Standard Chartered to launch a crypto exchange
TP ICAP, the world’s largest interdealer broker, has announced earlier today that it would be launching a cryptocurrency exchange. The trading consortium told Reuters it would be working with Fidelity Investments and Standard Chartered to offer Bitcoin trading services to its clients.According to the report, ICAP would work with Fidelity Digital Assets and Zodia Custody, launched by the venture capital arm of Standard Chartered, to create the Bitcoin trading platform. However, the exchange would only be launched when they get approval from the United Kingdom’s financial regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority.
ICAP said the cryptocurrency exchange would be similar to its other trading platforms that allow investors to gain exposure to traditional assets like stocks, bonds and foreign exchange. It added that the platform would provide post-trade infrastructure with a network of digital asset custodians. Furthermore, it would also offer separate execution and settlement, a move that could attract more investors to the emerging cryptocurrency market.
Duncan Trenholme, co-head of digital assets at TP ICAP, stated that “Investor interest in this new asset class had exploded dramatically in the last six to eight months. In most of our conversations with clients, they want a separation of custodial roles from execution capabilities which is opposite to the models that exist currently.”
ICAP to start with Bitcoin
ICAP said it would start by offering users exposure to Bitcoin. However, it intends to expand to Ether in the coming months. If it gains regulatory approval, ICAP will launch the Bitcoin trading platform in the second half of the year.The company is already active in the cryptocurrency space. ICAP launched BTC futures and options on the CME platform in 2019.
