Trezor removes Address Ownership Proof Protocol after community backlash
Trezor, 'a hardware wallet providing advanced security for handling Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies private keys', has rolled back the integration of Address Ownership Proof Protocol or AOPP following the backlash for Reddit and Twitter communities. The firm had recently integrated AOPP as per a Jan 28 update.
Trezor removes AOPP
The AOPP protocol is used to provide proof of ownership of an external wallet's address. This feature can be useful in countries wherein the authorities are very strict and require identification of Bitcoin withdrawals and deposits made by customers of non-custodial wallets like Trezor and Ledger.After introducing AOPP last week, the hardware wallet Trezor has now announced that it will be suspending the AOPP integration immediately. The AOPP protocol allows the wallet to generate signatures that confirm the ownership of assets. The crypto wallet firm stated in its statement:
"After careful consideration of recent feedback, we will be removing Address Ownership Proof Protocol (AOPP) in the next Trezor Suite update. The relevant pull request has already been submitted on GitHub."
Why remove AOPP?
Trezor explained in its blog why the firm has decided to remove the AOPP integration from its wallet. It said that "adopting AOPP was a small step toward improving usability for a portion of our customers with restricted access to Bitcoin" and that it wasn't a step taken under regulatory pressure or other external factors."We underestimated how this feature would be received, and we are against the regulations that concern AOPP," Trezor added.A major reason for the removal of this feature is the major backlash from Reddit and Twitter communities which claimed that Trezor is neglecting the customers' need for privacy in order to appease regulatory authorities and win their approval.
