U.S. imposes sanctions on virtual currency mixer Blender
The United States of America has imposed sanctions against virtual currency mixer Blender, a service that receives coins from you and gives you back other coins that do not relate to you. As per the official press release, the U.S. Treasury Department has accused the firm of being involved in the largest cryptocurrency exploit in the world of Defi, the Ronin Bridge hack.
First-ever sanctions on a virtual currency mixer
Blender now goes in history as the first-ever virtual currency mixer to be sanctioned by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). The OFAC believes that the mixer was used by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), led by its supreme leader Kim Jong-un to "support its malicious cyber activities and money-laundering of stolen virtual currency.""Today, for the first time ever, Treasury is sanctioning a virtual currency mixer," said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson. "Virtual currency mixers that assist illicit transactions pose a threat to U.S. national security interests. We are taking action against illicit financial activity by the DPRK and will not allow state-sponsored thievery and its money-laundering enablers to go unanswered."
Lazarus used Blender
As per the official press release from the U.S. Treasury, the Lazarus Group carried out the Ronin Bridge hack and drained around $620 million worth of users' funds. "Blender was used in processing over $20.5 million of the illicit proceeds," as per the release. Furthermore, the Treasury is also working on updating the List of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN List) to identify additional virtual currency addresses used by the Lazarus Group to launder the proceeds from its attack."OFAC's investigation also identified Blender's facilitation of money laundering for, among others, Russian-linked malign ransomware groups including Trickbot, Conti, Ryuk, Sodinokibi, and Gandcrab," added the Treasury department.
