Valliance Bank announced today that it would offer its customers access to Bitcoin and Ethereum through its mobile app, using Bakkt's regulated crypto-connect solution.

Oklahoma City-based Valliance Bank plans to allow its customers to access Bitcoin and Ethereum through its mobile app. By partnering with Bakkt, the bank plans to offer digital assets to its existing customers. In addition to its virtual bank, V. BANK. Valliance has five locations in Oklahoma and Texas with more than $580 million in total assets.Bakkt's platform lowers barriers to entry and enables banks and other partners to entrust Bakkt with the custody and settlement of transactions. Several participating banks have joined Bakkt's crypto-connect solution, which is expected to launch in Q2 2022.
Regional banks are diving into crypto
Investors today buy Bitcoin through exchanges like Coinbase and FTX or apps like PayPal and BlockFi. That could change if banks get into crypto trading and custody. It appears that Valliance is not the only regional bank that has recognized this opportunity. Other regional banks such as Synovus Financial and Oklahoma-based Vast Bank have also discussed plans to offer retail cryptocurrency trading.According to an article from American Banker around 300 banks plan to launch Bitcoin trading via mobile apps in the first half of 2022. Most of these banks are partnering with digital asset management firms such as NYDIG and Bakkt. This could be a real game-changer for retail participants, as well as for the banks themselves, because even if cryptocurrencies do not bring significant revenue to banks, they could be a new way to generate fees and retain customers for other products and services.
