WhatsApp users will be able to send crypto payments
WhatsApp has launched a new pilot that will allow a "limited number" of people in the US to send and receive money in cryptocurrency within a chat. The feature is powered by Novi, Meta's digital wallet that launched as a pilot six weeks ago. Payments are made using Pax Dollars (USDP), a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. Sending a payment works similarly to sending any other attachment in WhatsApp. You access the feature via the paperclip icon on Android or the + icon on iOS, then select "Payment" from the menu that appears.It's worth noting that there are no fees for sending or receiving money, there are no limits on the frequency of payments, and there are no fees for maintaining a balance in your Novi account or transferring money to your bank account. Payments are also transferred immediately. The Novi pilot will only be available in the US and will not impact WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption, which is used by default for all personal conversations.
The plans are in line with Meta it's previous crypto plans
The plans align with former Facebook now Meta Platforms' earlier plans to develop and launch a cryptocurrency called Diem, but the company had to change direction due to regulatory concerns. Meta eventually launched the wallet developed by the company without Diem. Instead, Pax Dollars are the creation of a separate company called Paxos and Meta relies on cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase as a custodian partner.WhatsApp's US payments plans currently revolve around Novi and cryptocurrencies, but WhatsApp already offers payments in traditional fiat currencies elsewhere in the world. The feature launched in India last year and is now available in Brazil.
