YouTube is looking into NFTs
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki hinted that the company will consider NFTs as another source of revenue for video producers in the future. "We're always focused on expanding the YouTube ecosystem to help creators capitalize on emerging technologies, including things like NFTs, while continuing to strengthen and enhance the experiences creators and fans have on YouTube," the letter reads.Wojcicki said YouTube looks to the Web3 ecosystem "as a source of inspiration," referring specifically to opportunities in the crypto space such as decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) and NFTs. The mention of NFTs was part of Wojcicki's recent letter to the YouTube community about the company's plans to invest in areas like gaming and shopping and how it plans to support creators. YouTube did not provide further details on what NFT features might look like at the company.
Some rivals are already one step ahead
It's not an unusual move from YouTube to take NFTs seriously, as other companies like Twitter have already introduced NFT features. Twitter now offers a way for users who have an NFT to verify it on its platform via a hexagonal profile picture. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, is reportedly preparing something similar where users can view the tokens they own. An NFT marketplace is also said to be in the works.If YouTube allowed creators to sell NFTs directly to their fans, that would be a big deal because NFTs are already quite mainstream but have not yet been widely adopted by most content creators. YouTube getting involved with NFTs could be a significant event that changes that in 2022.
