Andreessen Horowitz or better known as a16z, a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley, California, plans to invest $500 million in Indian crypto startups, as per a new report from TechCrunch.
Andreessen Horowitz plans aggressive expansion
Andreessen Horowitz made its first investment in India via the Bengaluru-based cryptocurrency exchange CoinSwitch Kuber last year. However, as per the recent announcement, this surely won't be its last statement as the firm is reportedly looking to hire for several investment roles in the country. Interestingly, the firm has decided to allocate $500 million to fund Indian crypto startups.Furthermore, a person familiar with the matter said that Seema Amble and Sumeet Singh, partners at Andreessen Horowitz, have been actively engaged with several Indian crypto startups. It seems that the firm plans to aggressively move forward in the world of crypto and doesn't want to leave any stone unturned.
Andreessen Horowitz had initiated a $2.2 billion crypto fund in 2021, which made headlines worldwide to explore the numerous opportunities within the cryptocurrency market. It also created a new kind of multidisciplinary lab called the a16z crypto research unit, which was focused on Web 3.0.
India to become a "frontrunner" for Web 3.0
As per data from PitchBook, $23.5 billion have been allocated to Indian startups by VCs, and as a result, over 17 unicorns were created in the nation in 2021. Of these $23.5 billion, VCs have allocated $587.16 million to Web 3.0 and crypto-based firms. This also includes the funding round of cryptocurrency exchange CoinSwitch Kuber in which Andreessen Horowitz also participated.Speaking about the potential of the world's second-most populous country, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao called India the frontrunner for Web 3.0 startups.
