The ETF by BlackRock will follow the NYSE FactSet Global Blockchain Technologies Index, according to the application. At the time of publication, detailed information on the index's components was unavailable, however the iShares filing said that component businesses will include:(a) cryptocurrency mining
(b) cryptocurrency trading and exchanges
(c) crypto-mining systems

“The ETF seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S and non-U.S companies that are involved in the development, innovation, and utilization of blockchain and crypto technologies.”

According to Business Insider, the firm already hinted late last year that it would consider launching a blockchain-related ETF.Blackrock's apparent crypto strategy coincides with the company's entrance into the crypto ETF industry. Blackrock has about $400 million invested in Bitcoin (BTC) mining equities, according to reports from the summer of 2021. The firm's total assets under management (AUM) is around $10 trillion.
While CEO Larry Fink sees "huge opportunities" for digital currency, however, he seems unsure how the crypto market will perform in the long run.
In January 2021, the asset manager hinted that the company's Strategic Income Opportunities Fund (BASIX) and Global Allocation Fund (MDLOX) could invest in cash-settled bitcoin futures traded on commodity exchanges regulated with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
The NYSE FactSet Global Blockchain Technologies Index fell 10.32% on Friday, closing at 172.33. The Index is down by 23.4% year to date.
